The impact of supervisor and research community support on PhD candidates’ research engagement

Supervisor and research community support are among the key determinants of a positive experience for PhD candidates. Yet, empirical evidence individual variation in experienced social candidates is still limited. In this study, we adopted person-centered approach to detect distinct profiles their relationship with experiences engagement. We also examined how certain background variables explained belonging profile. The data were collected spring 2021. Altogether, 768 from Finnish university participated study. detected three (High, Moderate Low supervisor support) that systematically differed each other terms levels candidates’ Additionally, discovered writing monograph, working alone (not group), being latter phases studying, domestic candidate, raised odds profile lower support. results study can be used developing doctoral education supervision practices.
